Breaking news: Travel in Reserved Coaches with a Waiting List Ticket is Prohibited

From May 1, 2025, IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) has introduced a hard rule that no waiting list passengers will be allowed to travel in Sleeper and AC class coaches on Indian Railways.

This introduction which would rationalise and decongest train travel on the Indian Railway System has created a mammoth debate amongst regular travellers, particularly during the peak season of summer travel.

What Has Changed?

In the past waiting list passengers used to board a train with a waiting list ticket, without thinking twice, other than possible verbal consent from the Train Ticket Examiner. In addition, many travelling with waiting list tickets would strike informal arrangements with other passengers with confirmed tickets to adjust in Sleeper or AC class. But now:

Key Features of the New Rule:

• No entry in Sleeper or AC coach if on waiting list (WL) only.

• Only confirmed and RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) ticket holders will be allowed in Sleeper & AC classes.

• Applicable to Express, Superfast, and Mail trains, both on long distance and premium class, including Rajdhani, Duronto, and Vande Bharat trains.

• Will be enforced strictly by Railway Protection Force (RPF) or Train Ticket Examiners (TTEs).

 Effective Date: May 1, 2025

This regulation became effective on Wednesday, May 1, 2025, coinciding with the summer vacation rush when millions of people travel across India.

 Why This Decision?

According to senior railway officials, and the Ministry of Railways, this guideline was implemented because :

Reasons for the Ban:

• Passenger Safety: Overcrowded coaches likewise mean an increased risk of accidents and medical emergencies.

• Comfort & Cleanliness: WL travelers sometimes compromise for the comfort of the reserved passengers.

• Revenue Leak: Through unregulated informal arrangements, lesser transparency and loss of ticket revenue increase.

• Digitalization of Ticket Checking: IRCTC wants to improve AI-based passenger surveillance as well as facilitate automation of the seat allocation system.
